More than 14.5% of Kamchatka territory is a specially protected area. There are 3 conservation areas, 4 natural parks and 84 natural reserves on Kamchatka. Six zones called “Kamchatka’s Volcanoes” are included in thе list of the UNESCO world heritage. These are caldera of the Uzon Volcano, Kronotsky Biosphere Preservation Area, Nalychevo Natural Park, Bystrinskiy Natural Park, South Kamchatka Natural Park, Klyuchevskiy Natural Park.

GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION OF KAMCHATKA

The Kamchatka Region is located in the far North-East of Russia and occupies the territory of 472300 sq. km. The Kamchatka Region comprises part of the continent, the Kamchatka peninsula as well as Karaginskiy and Komandorskiye Islands. In the South Kamchatka borders to the Kuril Islands, in the North and North-West – to Chukotka Autonomous Region and Magadan Region. In the East it is washed by the Pacific Ocean, in the North-East – by the Bering Sea and in the West – by the Sea of Okhotsk..

KAMCHATKA VOLCANOES

Kamchatka places 29 active and 160 dead volcanoes. They are situаted in the form of two belts with north-south direction in Eastern and South-Eastern parts of the peninsula and are a part of the Fiery Ring of the Pacific Ocean.

THERMAL SPRINGS ON KAMCHATKA

Thermal springs are frequently met in the volcanic districts. Kamchatka is not an exception to the rule: nearly 150 different groups of thermal springs are situated on the peninsula. Some of them are described below.
